    A 25th-anniversary tribute to Jay Chou’s Fantasy

14 September 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Jay Chou’s Fantasy, originally released on 14 September 2001. To commemorate the occasion, an HG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Beyond Global was customised as a personal interpretation of the RX-78-2 Ver. J.

The project combines Gunpla customisation with the visual style associated with Jay Chou and Phantaci, using custom paintwork and decals.

    Painting

The build began with all parts airbrushed in Mr. Hobby Mr. Color No. 2 Gloss Black. The parts were kept on their runners during this stage and left to dry.

Selected parts were then painted with Mr. Hobby Mr. Color No. 9 Metallic Gold, while the remaining sections retained their gloss-black finish.

For panel lining, Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color Light Grey was applied to the black parts, while Black was used on the metallic-gold parts. After drying, excess panel liner was removed using Tamiya X-20 Thinner and cotton buds.

Selected areas were subsequently highlighted with a silver permanent marker.

    Assembly and Ver. J details

After the painting and detailing stages, the parts were cut from the runners and assembled.

Phantaci-themed decals were then applied to establish the Ver. J identity of the RX-78-2.

The final colour treatment was created after assembly. Diluted Mr. Hobby Mr. Color No. 100 Gloss Wine Red was airbrushed over selected silver-marker highlights and Phantaci decals, producing the desired pink finish.

The combination of gloss black, metallic gold, silver and pink gives the Beyond Global a distinctive interpretation of the Ver. J colour scheme.

    25 years of Fantasy

The completed HG 1/144 RX-78-2 Beyond Global serves as a physical tribute to the 25th anniversary of Fantasy.

Through custom paint, panel lining and Phantaci-themed decals, the Ver. J concept has been reinterpreted using the Beyond Global kit.

A Gundam, a collection of paints and decals, and an album released 25 years ago come together in one commemorative build.
