The RX-78-2 in “Listen to Mum”

While revisiting Jay Chou’s “Listen to Mum” (聽媽媽的話) music video (MV), I noticed an RX-78-2 Gundam standing on the right-hand side of the opening frame. As the song progresses and Jay sings and raps, the RX-78-2 remains in the background.

So I decided to build my own interpretation of that RX-78-2.

For this project, I chose Bandai’s 1/144 Entry Grade (EG) RX-78-2 Gundam.

I began with a Neutral Grey base coat, followed by airbrushed colour modulation and weathering across the armour. Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color was then used to bring out the details in the recesses.

This is not intended to be an exact reproduction of the Gundam seen in the MV. It is simply my interpretation of the RX-78-2 I noticed there.

“Listen to Mum” was released on Jay Chou’s 2006 album “Still Fantasy” (依然范特西). The song is, of course, about growing up and gradually understanding a mother’s efforts and care.

Today, 5 September 2026, marks the 20th anniversary of “Still Fantasy”.

Twenty years later, spotting that RX-78-2 in the MV gave me another reason to revisit the song.
